In traditional Chinese culture, the number "three" has the connotation of auspiciousness, completeness, and infinity. Phrases such as "Three Yangs Bring Good Luck", "Three Begets All Things", and "Three Begets Have Fortune" are well-known. Patterns such as "three beasts", "three geese", and "three fishes with one head" are widely seen in lacquerware and roof tiles of the Qin and Han dynasties, and even in painted pottery earlier than that.
